Travel: A Day Trip to Traquair House, Innerleithen, Scotland

One of my favourite stately homes to visit with the kids is Traquair House, in the Borders region of Scotland. It lies near Innerleithen, about 1hr away from Edinburgh by car, so is easily accessible for a day trip.  Traquair has been lived in for over 900 years and was first used as a hunting lodge by the old kings and queens of Scotland.

The house is fascinating for both kids and grownups. There are exhibits of Mary Queen of Scots artefacts and a hidden staircase which my kids found very intriguing. My favourite bit, however, is the beech maze located outside in the gardens, which provided much hilarity.

There is a little tearoom with a resident peacock and a brewery and also resident craft community producing jewellery, woodwork and art.

Mr Peacock was a very willing model as you can see.
