Eating out with kids always seems to be hit or miss with us and more often than not we find ourselves comprising on quality just to keep the kids happy. On our recent trip to Portland, ME we stumbled across a few gems that I thought I'd recommend as we found ourselves enjoying really good food, which the kids also enjoyed. All of these restaurants centred on the Old Port area of Maine, an upbeat area filled with independent shops, which buzzes all day. I'd really recommend staying here if you have a short break to this vibey little city.
Our first find was El Rayo Taqueria (York Street), a relaxed Mexican eatery with live music and delicious margaritas. The kids menu was varied and mine decided on bean and chicken quesadillas. I'd recommend the street style corn, which I'm determined to recreate in my own kitchen and also the burritos which are served in incredibly generous portions. For Japanese food I'd recommend Fuji (Exchange Street). The sushi is delicious and in addition to having a great kids menu, they also have dishes which they were happy for the kids to share. Chicken in Katsu sauce is one of their favourites, so were delighted to see this on the menu. Boone's Fish House and Oyster Room (Commercial St), overlooking the port, is another great restaurant with a delicious kids menu, filled with home favourites. My kids opted for mac n cheese which they pronounced very good (but not as good as the one I make). We sat in glorious sunshine outside on the deck while we lunched on delicious salads from a very varied and tempting menu. Our favourite burger stop of our trip was at B.Good (Exchange St). Here, apart from the fab kids menu, they also have delicious burger and salad variations and gluten free options. The kids loved them and so did we.
Finally for ice-cream options, I'd recommend the Mount Desert Island Ice Cream (Exchange St) which has fantastically quirky, but delicious, ice-cream options. I opted for Cardamom and Cinnamon which was amazing, though as usual, the kids opted for chocolate. Some things never change.
